2009_01_26_Young_ThomasA_ph_Tschoepe_1989.jpgDALLAS - With a host of bishops, monsignors, priests, deacons, seminarians and family members in attendance, Bishop Emeritus Thomas A. Tschoepe, the pastoral leader who guided and transformed the Diocese of Dallas after Vatican II, was laid to rest on Jan. 29. He was 93.

The fifth bishop of Dallas who served from 1969-1990, Bishop Tschoepe died on Jan. 24 after a lengthy illness. He had turned 93 on Dec. 17 at St. Joseph's Residence, the Oak Cliff facility at which he spent the last seven years.

Bp. Tschoepe grew up on a farm and is remembered for his work ethic, his passion for food and the outdoors. He was a special man who truly loved serving God by serving His flock, a calling that never ceased even after he retired as bishop in 1990. He asked to be assigned to a parish and was assigned to St. Joseph's Church in Waxahachie.

Among the hundreds who came to pay their final respects to Bishop Tschoepe were: Bishop Emeritus Charles V. Grahmann; Archbishop Emeritus Joseph A. Fiorenza of Galveston-Houston; Bishop Kevin Vann of Fort Worth; Bishop Michael Duca of Shreveport, La.; Bishop Michael Pfeiffer of San Angelo; Bishop Edmond Carmody of Corpus Christi; and Bishop Jacob Angadiath of St. Thomas Syro-Malabar in Chicago.
